NEW DELHI – The Food and Agriculture Organization's All Rice Price Index averaged 96.9 points in November, down 1.5% on month. The index was nearly 20% down on year and at the lowest level since April 2017, FAO said in a report.

The index fell mainly due to softer Indica and Aromatic prices. Indica fell 1.3% from October while Aromatic declined 3.9%. In contrast, Japonica prices rose 2.8% due to an increase in import tenders in East Asia, and Glutinous rice rose 1.7% on improved demand from China.

Indica prices showed a mixed trend across Asian exporters in November. Thailand recorded a modest recovery in Indica prices, supported by the government's price stablisation measures such as enhanced storage incentives and public procurement. "News of Thai officials securing government-to-government agreements with China and Singapore provided additional underpinning," the report said.

Pakistan saw Indica prices inch higher amid previously agreed sales deals with African buyers. "Quotations of Indian white rice proved less resilient, edging further down as new crop arrivals gained momentum, even as government domestic procurement progressed at a robust pace," the report said.

In Vietnam, Indica prices fell as traders waited for greater clarity on import policies in the Philippines after Manila extended its ban on non-specialty rice until Dec. 31, and linked import tariffs to international rice price movements.

In the Americas, trading activities extended the downward momentum in export prices. However, a sale to Iraq helped limit some losses, it added.  End
