MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in key markets of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as demand failed to pick up at the existing levels, while those in Maharashtra were steady, traders said. Sweetener prices are expected to fall further as demand is unlikely to pick up during this month, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kilograms as there was limited demand at the existing price levels, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Notwithstanding the lower sales quota allocation for Uttar Pradesh in December, prices are likely to fall further due to subdued demand, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than a month ago.

Prices in the resale markets of Uttar Pradesh fell by INR 10-15 per 100 kg due to muted demand. Traders are not buying in bulk, at the moment, Gupta said.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady Thursday, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are unlikely to increase, as demand is weak amid higher availability, he said.

The crushing season is underway, so traders are also not keeping stocks in the pipeline, and there will be no shortage throughout the month, Kuvadia said. Demand is unlikely to increase, as ice cream and cold drink consumption is low during the winter season.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,845-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,855-INR 3,920 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR  per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1928 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.5% at 14.86 cents per pound as a robust global sugar supply outlook weighed on prices. Conab, Brazil's crop forecasting agency, on Nov. 4 raised Brazil's 2025-26 sugar production estimate to 45.0 million tonnes from 44.5 million tonnes earlier.  End
