Maharashtra rabi acreage dn 6% on yr at 3.31 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of rabi crops in Maharashtra reached 3.31 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 6% from 3.52 million hectares covered a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal rabi acreage in the state, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares. 

 

The area under wheat rose to 455,809 hectares from 442,134 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under jowar slipped to 939,372 hectares from 1.1 million hectares, while the area sown with maize rose to 261,381 from 178,500 hectares. 

 

Chana acreage in the state was 1.57 million hectares, down from 1.71 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all pulses fell to 1.63 million hectares from 1.75 million hectares. 

 

The total area sown with all oilseeds was 24,033 hectares, down from 27,033 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of safflower fell to 19,019 hectares from 20,822 hectares. 

 

Rabi crops are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April in the state. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard and peas. 

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 90.37% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared with 83.84% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
