NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices were down on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Wednesday. Turmeric prices fell owing to a rise in acreage in key growing regions, analysts said. Coriander and jeera prices witnessed a correction from recent highs, they added. The gains had been driven by talk of reduced sowing with farmers reportedly shifting to more remunerative crops such as chana and wheat.

At 1713 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 0.9% at INR 14,642 per 100 kilograms pressured by expectations of higher acreage this season due to favourable monsoon rains, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Early indications suggest a 15–20% rise in turmeric acreage as farmers shift from less profitable crops.

However, the downside remains limited as excessive rainfall has affected yields negatively in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Nearly 15% of the crop in Nanded, a district in Maharashtra, has been damaged. Continuous rains in Erode, Tamil Nadu, have also triggered an outbreak of crop disease with high humidity making storage difficult, the brokerage said.

The most-active January contract of JEERA fell 0.9% to INR 21,880 per 100 kg. Prices are correcting after surging to a six-month high of INR 22,470 per 100 kg Monday, said Alok Pandey, spices analyst at SMC Global Securities. Prices had been rising because of adverse weather conditions, which resulted in delayed sowing across major jeera-growing regions. "Uneven rainfall has slowed field preparations in Gujarat, leading to one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years," Kedia Advisory said. Sowing of jeera is seen at around 1 million hectares in the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun), down from 1.17 million hectares last year, according to analysts.

The most-active December contract of CORIANDER was down 0.6% at INR 10,520 per 100 kg as prices corrected after the contract hit a one-year high of INR 10,772 per 100 kg Monday. "Dhaniya (coriander) market is expected to get support at prevailing prices after some corrections," SMC Global's Pandey said. Coriander prices have been rising on reports of lower acreage and on steady demand during the current wedding season. Prices are likely to rebound on reports of lower acreage, marriage season demand, and demand for Ramadan from West Asian countries, according to SMC Global.
