MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in Maharashtra on Tuesday due to poor demand amid ample availability, traders said. However, mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady, they said. Prices in Uttar Pradesh are likely to remain range-bound, as the December quota is lower than last month's, traders said.
Mills in parts of Maharashtra cut prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as demand was poor amid a higher availability, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 763,058 tonnes for the state in December, up over 30% from the previous month.
Moreover, the crushing season is underway, so traders are also not keeping stocks in the pipeline, and there will be no shortage throughout the month, Kuvadia said. Demand, however, is unlikely to pick up, as consumption of ice cream and cold drinks is low during the winter season.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady due to sluggish demand, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Prices will remain rangebound despite lower demand, as the sales quota allocated to the state for December is much lower than the previous month's, Gupta said. The sales quota allocated for Uttar Pradesh in December is nearly 11% down from a month ago at 656,591 tonnes.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 3,970 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,870-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,800-INR per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1935 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.5% at 14.83 cents per pound. Prices rose despite ample global availability. End
US$1 = INR 89.87
