Gujarat rabi acreage up 9% on year at 2.33 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat was 2.33 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 9% from 2.14 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal rabi crop acreage of 4.61 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 51% has been covered so far.

 

The area sown with wheat rose to 602,190 hectares from 485,770 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Wheat is grown only during the rabi season in India. The area under maize was 75,660 hectares, down from 81,205 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under jowar rose to 6,524 hectares from 6,408 hectares a year ago. The total area under all cereal crops was 694,083 hectares, higher than 580,061 hectares a year ago.

 

Chana acreage so far rose to 486,099 hectares from 387,250 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown with all pulses was up at 515,908 hectares from 437,036 hectares a year ago.

 

Among oilseeds, the area under mustard rose to 201,103 hectares from 180,286 hectares a year ago. The total area under all oilseed crops was 201,797 hectares, up from 182,167 hectares a year ago, according to the report.

 

The area under sugarcane was 81,779 hectares, down from 99,891 hectares a year ago. The acreage of vegetables fell to 80,696 hectares from 81,043 hectares a year ago. The area under tobacco rose to 81,047 hectares from 74,814 hectares. Cumin acreage was down at 194,775 hectares from 211,121 hectares a year ago, while coriander acreage rose to 55,333 hectares from 41,721 hectares. The area under potato was 130,080 hectares, higher than 114,989 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Onion acreage fell to 40,216 hectares from 41,464 hectares.

 

Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat.  End
