MUMBAI – Mustard seed prices rose in Jaipur, Rajasthan, as demand from millers improved. However, prices were steady in Kota, said traders. Prices of soybean and groundnut were steady across key markets, they said. Demand for soybean is low because of poor demand for soymeal due to availability of alternatives. But groundnut prices could rise in the coming days as arrivals drop, according to traders.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur rose by INR 50 to INR 7,275-INR 7,300 per 100 kilograms as demand from millers was firm, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country rose by 25,000 bags from the previous session to 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), according to GGN Research.

In Kota, Rajasthan, mustard seed prices were at INR 6,700 per 100 kg, unchanged from the previous day, Mahesh Sameriya, a trader, said. However, prices could rise as part of the kharif mustard crop in the state was damaged due to heavy rains at the end of October, he said. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day, he said.

SOYBEAN prices at Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,500-INR 4,700 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were at 11,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day, he added. "Owing to availability of alternatives to soymeal, such as dried distillers grains with solubles, soybean demand is low, which is why prices are range-bound," Porwal said. Soymeal is a byproduct of the extraction of oil from soybean.

Soybean prices had recovered a few weeks back by INR 150-INR 200 per 100 kg as there was some demand from oil plants in anticipation of prices rising. But the price levels could not be sustained, he said.

In Kota, soybean prices were steady at INR 4,651 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 25,000 bags, down 5,000 bags from the previous day, Sameriya said. Prices had risen on Friday by INR 50 per 100 kg, as demand from millers in Kota was firm, he said.

Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam were steady at INR 2,500-INR 5,200 per 100 kg as demand was weak, Porwal said. Arrivals were at 20,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), the same as the previous day, he said. However, prices are likely to increase in the coming days as arrivals begin to fall in December, he said. October and November are the peak months for groundnut arrivals, after which they start to decline.
