MUMBAI – Wheat prices fell on Friday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on weak demand, even as they were steady in other key spot markets, traders said. Maize and rice prices were steady due to a lack of fresh cues, they said. Traders expect wheat prices to remain rangebound in the short term.

Prices of WHEAT in Indore fell by INR 40 per 100 kilograms at INR 2,710 per 100 kg due to low demand, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Prices of wheat at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said.

Traders expect wheat prices to remain rangebound, as a decline could lead to lower acreage in the ongoing rabi season. A fall in wheat prices could lead to lower wheat sowing as farmers may shift to other crops with higher returns, they said.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,670 per 100 kg due to a lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. Prices are expected to rise in the near term as the market anticipates an increase in India's maize exports. Kochar said India's maize prices are in line with those of Bangladesh, and exports from India would rise. India exported 7,410 tonnes of maize to Bangladesh in Apr-Sept, up 14% on year, according to the data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Prices of major RICE varieties remained steady in most markets amid a lack of cues, traders said. In Vashi, prices of basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained unchanged at INR 7,100-INR 7,300 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was unchanged at INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady till the end of December, he said.

Some traders see rice prices falling further following the pause in rice imports by Indonesia and Senegal, while others do not see any changes in prices or in India's exports, as these two countries account for a marginal share of India's total rice exports.  End
