NEW DELHI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country fell 0.4% from the previous week to 161.218 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is nearly 88% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 7.3% from a year ago and nearly 21.4% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 16.619 billion cubic metres, which is around 84% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was over 57% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 17.374 billion cubic metres, nearly 80% of the total live storage capacity and higher than 73% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 36.297 billion cubic metres. This is almost 95.3% of the total live storage capacity, against 93.4% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 43.772 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is 90.1% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 84.7% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 47.155 billion cubic metres, 85.3% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was nearly 84% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 161 reported more than 80% of normal storage and five were at 80% or below of normal storage. Of these five, none had storage below 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 4.1 millimetres of rainfall, 23?low the normal of 5.3 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
