MUMBAI – Weak demand for maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, weighed on the prices Thursday, though traders expect prices to firm up soon on the back of export demand. Prices of 1401 variety basmati rice fell due to subdued buying while those of 1121 variety rose on firm demand, traders said. Prices of wheat held steady in benchmark markets on lack of fresh cues, they added.
MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 10 to INR 1,670 per 100 kilograms on low demand, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Trader expects maize prices to rise from the current level. Kochar said India's maize prices are at par with Bangladesh now and exports of maize from India would rise. India exported 7,410 tonnes of maize to Bangladesh in Apr-Sept, up 14% on year, according to the data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, remained steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,900 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals in Karnataka fell to 1,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) from 2,000 bags Wednesday. Arrivals fell as farmers staged a protest demanding that the government procure maize at the minimum support price, he said. The minimum support price of maize is INR 2,400 per 100 kg.
Prices of 1401 basmati RICE fell by INR 300-INR 400 per 100 kg to INR 7,100-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, due to low demand and price of 1121 rose by INR 100-INR 400 to INR 8,400-INR 8,800 on firm demand, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. Price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was stable at INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady till the end of December as "there is no demand but a lot of supply," he said.
WHEAT prices in Indore remained steady at INR 2,750 per 100 kg on lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. Prices of wheat at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, Vora said. Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were also unchanged at INR 2,400-INR 2,450 per 100 kg, according to Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals in Kota remained steady at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
Traders expect wheat prices to be range-bound, as a decline in prices could lead to lower acreage. A fall in wheat prices could lead to lower wheat sowing as farmers may shift to other crops with higher returns, they said. End
