MUMBAI - Futures contracts of spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Prices of coriander rose beyond the INR 10,000 per 100 kg level for the first time since November 2022 as a delay in sowing is fanning fears of a drop in acreage, analysts said. Prices of turmeric were supported by tight supplies, while prices of jeera rose due to weather-related concerns and low arrivals, they said.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 0.8% to INR 14,200 per 100 kg amid seasonal demand and tight supplies, which are likely to keep prices supported until the newly harvested crop begins arriving in markets, analysts at SMC Global said. Prices were also supported by growing concerns of crop damage. Excessive rainfall during September and October has affected yields in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, analysts at Kedia Advisory said. Prices are also supported by reports of crop damage due to continuous rains in Erode, Tamil Nadu, which has resulted in disease outbreaks in some areas, they said.
The most-active December contract of JEERA was up 0.6% at INR 21,650 per 100 kg due to weather-related issues, delayed sowing, and low arrivals in key markets, Kedia Advisory said. Adverse weather and delayed sowing across major growing regions such as Rajasthan and Gujarat are supporting prices. "Sowing of jeera, a rabi season crop, usually starts mid-October, and it is harvested in February to March. But due to higher moisture content in the soil during that time (mid-October) due to heavy showers, it has started now," said Ajay Kedia, founder and director of Kedia Capital Services Pvt. Ltd.
The most-active December contract of CORIANDER surged 5.2% to INR 10,250 per 100 kg, driven by a delay in sowing and fears of a lower acreage this year, Amit Gupta, senior research analyst at Kedia Advisory said. "Acreage is estimated to fall by 10-15% this time," he said. The overall coriander acreage across the country has reduced as farmers have shifted to more profitable crops such as wheat and chana, SMC Global said.
