NEW DELHI – The Punjab government has raised the state-advised prices of sugarcane by INR 15 to INR 416 per 100 kilograms for 2025-26 (Oct-Sep). Sugar mills in the state are mandated to purchase sugarcane from farmers at revised rates for the season.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced the hike on Wednesday during the inauguration of a new sugar mill and co-generation plant in Dinanagar. By fixing the rate at INR 416 per 100 kg, INR 1 higher than Haryana, the Punjab government has emphasised its "commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers," Times of India quoted the chief minister as saying.
The state-advised price is the minimum price announced by individual state governments at which sugar mills can procure sugarcane from farmers. This price varies from state to state, unlike the central government's fair and remunerative price. Currently, the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand have state-advised prices for sugarcane.
Recently, other sugarcane-growing states such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh raised the state-advised prices of sugarcane for 2025-26 season. In Haryana, the price for early maturing sugarcane varieties has been increased to INR 415 per 100 kg from INR 400 per 100 kg. The price of late-maturing sugarcane varieties has been increased to INR 408 per 100 kg from INR 393 per 100 kg. In Uttar Pradesh, the revised rates for early variety of sugarcane is INR 400 per 100 kg, and common variety is at INR 390 per 100 kg.
For 2025-26, the Centre's fair and remunerative price for sugarcane is INR 355 per 100 kg, up from INR 340 per 100 kg last season. Citing rising sugarcane costs, the sugar industry has been urging the government to hike the minimum selling price of sugar, which has remained unchanged since February 2019. It has also urged the government to revise the rates of ethanol produced from sugarcane feedstocks. End
