Maharashtra rabi acreage up 7% on yr at 2.60 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of rabi crops in Maharashtra reached 2.60 million hectares as of Monday, up more than 7% from 2.42 million hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. The normal rabi acreage in the state, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.

 

The acreage under wheat rose to 302,322 hectares from 208,807 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under jowar slipped to 828,211 hectares from 1.0 million hectares last year. Maize acreage was up at 211,125 hectares from 133,943 hectares a year ago.

 

Chana acreage in the state so far was 1.19 million hectares, up from 1.03 million hectares last year, according to the report. The total area sown under all pulses rose to 1.24 million hectares from 1.06 million hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds was 18,115 hectares, up from 17,761 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under safflower rose to 15,275 hectares from 13,379 hectares last year.

 

Rabi crops are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April in the state. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard and peas.

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 921.03% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared with 85.24% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
