MUMBAI – Prices of maize and wheat fell in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Wednesday due to muted demand, while they were steady in other key spot markets across the country, traders said. Rice prices remained unchanged due to a lack of fresh cues, they said. Maize and wheat prices are expected to decline in the near term due to low demand, they said.

MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 30 to INR 1,680 per 100 kilograms due to low demand, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Maize prices are expected to fall further by INR 50 per 100 kg as demand remains low, he said.  Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka were steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,900 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals in Karnataka fell to 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) from 5,000 bags Tuesday. The arrivals were lower due to the farmers' protest against the government, demanding maize procurement at the minimum support price, he said. The minimum support price of maize is INR 2,400 per 100 kg.

WHEAT prices in Indore fell by INR 15 per kg to INR 2,750 per 100 kg due to low demand. The prices are expected to fall further by INR 50, Kochar said. Prices of wheat at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. Wheat prices at Kota in Rajasthan were also unchanged at INR 2,400-INR 2,450 per 100 kg, Aniket Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals in Kota were largely steady at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Some traders expect wheat prices to remain rangebound, as a decline in rates could lead to lower acreage, traders said. A decline in wheat prices could lead to lower wheat sowing as farmers may shift to other crops with higher profitability, they said.

Prices of major RICE varieties remained steady in most markets amid a lack of cues, traders said. In Vashi, prices of basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, respectively, according to Vora. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was stable at INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady till the end of December as "there is no demand but a lot of supply," he said.  End
