Rajasthan rabi acreage up 9% on year at 9.40 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Rajasthan was 9.40 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 9% on year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Rajasthan's normal acreage of rabi crops, which is the average of the past five years, is 11.25 million hectares, of which nearly 84% has been covered so far.  

 

The area under barley rose to 322,107 hectares from 289,331 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Acreage of wheat rose to 2.54 million hectares from 1.85 million hectares. The area sown under all cereals was 2.86 million hectares, up nearly 34% from 2.14 million hectares a year ago. 

 

The total acreage under pulses was 2.05 million hectares, up from 1.90 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Among pulses, the area under chana was 2.03 million hectares, up from 1.85 million hectares a year ago. 

 

The total area under oilseeds was 3.41 million hectares, up from 3.25 million hectares a year ago. Under oilseeds, mustard acreage was 3.28 million hectares, up from 3.16 million hectares a year ago. 

 

Rabi crops are sown after the monsoon rains are over and are harvested between April and May. Barley, wheat, gram or desi chana, and oilseeds such as rapeseed and mustard, are the key crops grown in the state during the rabi season. Rajasthan's target for rabi sowing this season is 12.02 million hectares, of which 78% has been achieved.  End
