MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose while those of tur and urad remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders Tuesday said. Chana prices increased tracking the rise in prices of the imported commodity from Australia, they said. Prices of tur held steady amid limited demand and urad was flat due to a lack of cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 25 from Monday to INR 5,625-INR 5,650 per 100 kilograms, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices increased in line with the rise in the imported commodity from Australian, he said. With domestic chana arrivals and demand currently too low to provide a direction, the market is tracking the price movement of imports, he said

Prices of imported chana are also likely to fall in the short term as overall demand is still weak, Kedia said. Import prices are under pressure from the Nov-Dec shipments from Australia, he said. Around 100,000-150,000 tonnes of chana from Australia is likely to hit Indian ports before the end of the year, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 5,700-ONR 5,725 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola were steady at INR 6,875-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices are steady amid some need-based demand from millers, he said. Currently, the market is still getting the previous year's kharif crop, he said. "Last year, we had good crop so we are still receiving some of it, otherwise at this time of the year, domestic arrivals dry up," he said.

According to the final estimates of food grain output for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun), tur production is estimated at 3.6 million tonnes compared to 3.4 million tonnes last year.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,050-INR 7,150 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 6,400-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, remained steady at INR 6,400-INR 7,200 per 100 kg. Prices were steady due to a lack of cues, traders said.

In the near term, urad is likely to see need-based demand from millers and traders, who are currently holding limited stocks, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Prices may firm up due to a fall in arrivals of the new kharif crop and lower imports from Brazil, as exporters have already shipped most urad stock to India, the association said.   End
