MUMBAI – Futures contracts of spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday due to profit-booking, analysts said. Prices of jeera and coriander were also weighed down by reports of a rise in acreage, they said. However, the fall in prices of turmeric is expected to be capped due to firm demand and supply concerns, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC fell 0.9% to INR 14,012 per 100 kg due to profit-booking after prices surged on Monday, according to Amit Gupta, senior research analyst at Kedia Advisory. Tight supplies amid firm seasonal demand during the ongoing wedding season had lifted prices in the past few days, he said.

The fall in prices is likely to be limited due to persistent concern about crop loss and damage in major producing states, analysts at SMC Global said. Yield losses in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka due to excessive rainfall in the second half of September and the first half of October have raised supply concern, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

The most-active December contract of JEERA was down 1.8% at INR 21,355 per 100 kg on profit-booking for the second consecutive day as prices stayed elevated at the INR 21,000 per 100 kg level, Gupta said. Prices had risen last week, supported by duty relaxation by the US, SMC Global said. Prices were also weighed down by reports of a rise in jeera acreage this year, Gupta said. In Gujarat, one of the top producers of the spice, jeera acreage was up at 71,758 hectares from 57,915 hectares a year ago as of Monday.

The most-active December contract of CORIANDER fell 1.1% to INR 9,332 per 100 kg due to profit booking. Concerns about a rise in acreage also weighed down on prices, Gupta said. Coriander acreage in Gujarat rose to 18,174 hectares from 15,955 hectares last year. However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited due to firm demand during the wedding season, SMC Global said. Demand for Ramadan from West Asian countries is also supporting prices, the brokerage said.
