Gujarat rabi acreage up 5% on year at 1.23 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 1.23 million hectares as of Monday, up over 5% from 1.16 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal rabi crop acreage of 4.61 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 27% has been covered so far.
The area sown with wheat rose to 269,957 hectares from 211,946 hectares a year ago, the crop report showed. Wheat is grown only during the rabi season in India. The area under maize was 54,477 hectares, down from 61,299 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under jowar fell to 3,294 hectares from 5,284 hectares. The total area under all cereal crops was 330,309 hectares, higher than 280,674 hectares a year ago.
Chana acreage in the state so far rose to 217,642 hectares from 183,973 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown with all pulses was up at 241,287 hectares from 230,387 hectares a year ago.
Among oilseeds, the area under mustard was 138,578 hectares, up from 132,730 hectares a year ago. The total area under all oilseed crops was 139,253 hectares, up from 134,531 hectares a year ago, according to the report.
The area under sugarcane was 63,526 hectares, down from 86,639 hectares a year ago. The acreage of vegetables was up at 53,296 hectares from 51,686 hectares a year ago. The area under tobacco rose to 56,068 hectares from 46,725 hectares. Cumin acreage was up at 71,758 hectares from 57,915 hectares a year ago and coriander acreage rose to 18,174 hectares from 15,955 hectares. The area under potato was 67,615 hectares, marginally higher than 66,655 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Onion acreage rose to 25,079 hectares from 24,838 hectares.
Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon rains are over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat. End
