MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar rose in key markets of Uttar Pradesh as market sentiment turned positive on talk of a hike in the minimum selling price, said traders. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady again as demand did not pick up.

Most mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 10 per 100 kg as market participants see government increasing the minimum selling price for sugar year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Moreover, the Uttar Pradesh government has increased the state advisory price for sugarcane by INR 30 per 100 kg for the 2025-26 crushing season. This also led mills to raise prices, Gupta said.

However, Gupta expects prices to be rangebound as the hike in minimum selling price has only a notional impact. "Even if the minimum selling price is revised, it will not have any such impact on prices as the government keeps domestic prices in check by releasing monthly sales quotas," Gupta said.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady due to weak demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. He expects prices to remain rangebound throughout the month.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,850-INR 3,970 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,870-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2122 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.2% at 14.82 cents per pound, tracking a rise in crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Rise in crude oil prices results in increased diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing the availability of sugar.  End

US$1 = INR 89.23
