MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops across India touched 30.6 million hectares as of Friday, up little over 12% from 27.3 million hectares sown last year, a release from the agriculture ministry Monday showed. The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, was 12.8 million hectares, up nearly 20% from 10.7 million hectares in the corresponding period last year. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.
Acreage under paddy was 826,000 hectares, an increase of nearly 9% from 759,000 hectares last year.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, increased nearly 14% on year to 1.97 million hectares. Within this category, jowar acreage rose 6.6% to 899,000 hectares and maize was up 22% at 657,000 hectares. Ragi also saw a sharp rise to 49,000 hectares from 38,000 hectares.
The total area sown under all pulses in the country so far in the 2025-26 season was 7.3 million hectares, up over 7% on year. Among key pulses, chana acreage rose 9% to 5.4 million hectares and that of masur increased more than 5% to 901,000 hectares. Acreage under urad fell over 11% to 88,000 hectares, and moong dropped over 22% to 7,000 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds was 7.7 million hectares, up 5.4% from 7.3 million hectares last year. Groundnut acreage declined nearly 12% to 112,000 hectares, while mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose over 6% to 7.4 million hectares. Sunflower acreage increased to 16,000 hectares from 12,000 hectares, while linseed declined to 98,000 hectares from 139,000 hectares last year.
