MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander rose, while those of jeera fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Prices of turmeric rose due to higher seasonal demand and concerns about crop damage, analysts said. Prices of jeera fell due to profit-booking, while prices of coriander rose due to reports of a drop in acreage and firm wedding season demand, they said.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose 1.1% to INR 14,120 per 100 kg due to good seasonal buying and strong demand in spot markets, analysts at SMC Global said. Tight supplies coupled with worries about potential yield losses in key growing regions are also supporting prices, SMC Global said.
Yield losses in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka due to excessive rainfall in the last leg of the southwest monsoon have raised supply concerns, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Incessant rainfall in Erode, Tamil Nadu, has led to outbreak of diseases in the standing turmeric crop, and led to high humidity, making crop preservation difficult, it said.
The most-active December contract of JEERA was down 0.5% at INR 21,600 per 100 kg on profit-booking as prices stayed elevated beyond the INR 21,000 per 100 kg level last week, analysts said. Prices had risen last week, supported by duty relaxation by the US, SMC Global said. The fall in prices is likely to be limited due to delay in sowing of the spice across major producing states, Kedia Advisory said. Uneven rainfall has slowed field preparation, with Gujarat experiencing one of its slowest sowing seasons in years, it said.
The most-active December contract of CORIANDER rose nearly 3% to INR 9,434 per 100 kg, supported by reports of lower acreage in key growing regions and firm demand during the wedding season, SMC Global said. Demand for Ramadan from West Asian countries is also supporting prices, the brokerage said.
