NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of coriander and jeera rose while those of turmeric fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Friday. Coriander prices rose due to strong wedding season demand, while prices of jeera increased on the back of duty relaxation by the US. Turmeric contracts continued to fall due to profit-taking after prices surged above INR 14,500 per 100 kilograms Thursday, analysts said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC declined 2.7% to INR 14,000 per 100 kg due to continued profit booking, as prices crossed the INR 14,500-per-100-kg mark Thursday, and touched a low of INR 13,980 per 100 kg during the day. The steep fall comes despite the broader positive outlook. The market is likely to remain bullish amid tight supply and good seasonal demand, SMC Global said. Additionally, fears of crop damage from excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are seen as restricting sharper declines in prices, according to Kedia Advisory.

The most-active December contract of JEERA rose 1% to INR 21,675 per 100 kg supported by the duty relaxation by the US, analysts at SMC Global said. Additionally, expectations of slightly lower acreage are likely to keep market sentiment positive in the near term, they said.

The most-active December contract of CORIANDER rose 3.6% to INR 9,160 per 100 kg, bolstered by brisk marriage-season buying, relatively lower arrivals, and overseas demand for the upcoming Ramadan, analysts said. Steady buying from traders and retailers, along with tight supply conditions, continue to bolster overall market sentiment, they said. Lower acreage is also seen providing support, SMC said in a note. As per the latest data, coriander has been sown on 11,067 hectares, down 7% from same period last year, as farmers are reportedly shifting towards more profitable crops such as wheat and chana, the brokerage said.
