NEW DELHI – Chana and tur prices declined in major spot markets on Friday, weighed by cheaper imports and sluggish buying interest, while masur continued to trade largely steady, traders said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 50 from Thursday to INR 5,675-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were weighed down by the ongoing imports of cheaper chana from Australia, he said. The country began receiving the Nov-Dec shipments of Australian chana last week. Prices are likely to remain under presssure in the short term due to the imports and overall subdued demand, he said.

Meanwhile, the sowing of rabi chana is progressing well in Madhya Pradesh, Jain said. Chana sowing is likely to reach its final stages at the end of November, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,725 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 7,000-INR 7,025 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. The ongoing imports of tur from African countries, which is cheaper than the domestic variety, is pushing prices lower, he said. "African tur is cheaper by INR 30 per kg (than domestic tur)," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, also fell by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 7,100-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are steady due to a lack of cues in the domestic market, he said. "Most of the business is happening in the import market, here (domestic market) both arrivals and demand are weak," he said. Prices of masur are expected to be range-bound in the near term, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,700 per 100 kg.  End
