MUMBAI – The International Grains Council has revised its global food grain production forecast for 2025–26 upwards by 5 million tonnes to 2.43 billion tonnes, including increases in wheat, maize, and barley output, according to its monthly report released Thursday. So far, harvests have been better than expected, with projections revised upwards in consecutive reports since August.
The council has also raised its forecast for total year-end food grain stocks by 1 million tonnes to a three-year high of 619 million tonnes. The increase is driven largely by higher export inventories, as per its report. The outlook for the global grain trade has been revised upwards to 442 million tonnes, from 440 million tonnes in the previous month.
The global wheat production estimate has been raised to 830 million tonnes from October's projection of 827 million tonnes. The council estimates global wheat consumption at 819 million tonnes, down from 820 million tonnes in October. The forecast for carryover wheat stocks remains unchanged at 275 million tonnes.
Global grain consumption in 2025–26 is now expected to reach a new high of 2.4 billion tonnes, driven by increased food, feed, and industrial demand.
Global maize production is estimated to remain unchanged at 1.3 billion tonnes, the same as in October and in September, according to the report. The forecast for global maize consumption also remains unchanged from October's estimate at 1.29 billion tonnes.
The global rice production forecast for the year has been raised by 1 million tonnes from October to 543 million tonnes. On the other hand, the estimate of global rice consumption has been lowered by 1 million tonnes from October to 539 million tonnes, according to the report.
The forecast for world soybean production has been cut to 426 million tonnes, from 428 million tonnes estimated in October. Global soybean consumption in 2025–26 is expected to rise to 431 million tonnes, compared with 430 million tonnes estimated in October. The soybean trade is seen at 187 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous month, the council added. End
