NEW DELHI – Wheat prices remained unchanged in most markets despite Food Corp. of India slowing down the frequency of its wheat auctions to once a fortnight from weekly. Traders see wheat prices remaining range-bound with a downward bias due to poor demand in the coming weeks. Rice and maize prices were steady in most markets, they added.
Prices of WHEAT in Indore were unchanged at INR 2,750 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues, local trader Guarav Kochar said. Prices were also stable in Vashi, Maharashtra, at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.
According to traders, wheat prices were not impacted by FCI shifting its wheat auction frequency to once a fortnight from weekly. FCI had decided to enter the market only once every two weeks amid weak demand. Last week, Food Corp. sold just over a third of the 200,000 tonnes it offered, as ample supplies in the market at competitive mandi prices kept buyers at bay.
"There was no price reaction. Demand is already down," Vora said. Amid ample market suppliers, millers and processors need not resort to government supplies to meet their requirements.
However, prices in Kota, Rajasthan, slipped by INR 25-INR 50 to INR 2,450-2,475 per 100 kg due to poor demand, local trader Aniket Mehta said. "Demand is very poor. The market is very slow," Mehta said.
Bulk buyers are not rushing to stock up on wheat amid ample market supplies, traders said. In addition, they have limited their purchases just to meet immediate requirements as they anticipate prices to fall in the coming months. "Prices are likely to remain largely range-bound with downward bias," Mehta said.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 1,730 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Maize prices, already ruling at lower levels, are likely to remain largely unchanged amid comfortable supplies and weak demand, traders said.
Prices of major varieties of RICE were steady in most markets due to lack of cues, traders said. In Vashi, Navi Mumbai, prices of basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, respectively, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.
