MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh recovered slightly on Wednesday as there was demand at lower price levels, said traders. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady again, they said.
Some mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as demand improved at lower prices, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices have fallen by over INR 150 per 100 kg since October, so they are now recovering, he said. Moreover, market sentiment was also slightly positive as the government said that it might revise the minimum selling price for sugar this year, Gupta added.
However, Gupta expects the downtrend in prices to continue as the hike in minimum selling price has only a notional impact. "Even if the minimum selling price is revised, it will not have any such impact on prices as the government keeps domestic prices in check by releasing monthly sales quotas," Gupta said. During the past few days, prices fell as crushing of sugarcane was in full swing but demand for sugar was limited.
Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady due to weak demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. He expects prices to remain rangebound throughout the month.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,840-INR 3,970 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,860-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1958 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1% at 14.86 cents per pound. The International Sugar Organization has forecast a global sugar deficit of 231,000 tonnes for the 2025-26 season, marking the sixth consecutive year of deficit, which is a bullish factor for global sugar prics.
