NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices were up on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Turmeric contracts rose as low prices attracted buyers. Coriander was up on strong wedding season demand. Jeera prices rose on fears of lower crop output this year, analysts said.
At 1622 IST, the most-active December contract of TURMERIC was up 1% at INR 14,400 per 100 kg on buying interest at lower prices following the recent fall. The long-term trend is seen bullish given the supply tightness amid good seasonal demand, SMC Global said. Moreover, market sentiment remains firm as crop damage due to excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka has restricted sharper declines, as per Kedia advisory. The continuous rains in Erode have led to disease outbreaks, complicating storage conditions due to high humidity, while depleted stocks with farmers in Warangal and limited fresh arrivals further support the market tone, the brokerage added.
The most-active December contract of JEERA was up 1.2% at INR 21,445 per 100 kg due to seasonal buying as well as delayed sowing and expectations of lower acreage in the ongoing season, SMC Global said. Gujarat is witnessing one of the most delayed sowing seasons in years due to erratic rain, making field preparation sluggish, Kedia Advisory said. Moreover, an improvement in export demand from Gulf countries and China, though still sensitive to price and freight fluctuations, is also giving support to prices, it said.
The most-active December contract of CORIANDER rose 2.5% to INR 8,824 per 100 kg, supported by strong marriage-season demand, reduced arrival pressure, and with overseas demand for upcoming Ramadan, analysts said. Steady buying from traders and retailers, along with tight supply conditions, continues to bolster overall market sentiment, they said.
