MUMBAI – Maize prices fell Wednesday, while rice held steady and wheat showed mixed trend in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of maize declined under pressure from fresh kharif crop arrivals and weak demand. Prices of rice remained unchanged due to a lack of cues. Wheat fell in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on weak market sentiment and muted demand, they added.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 40 per 100 kilograms to INR 1,730 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Demand for the grain is weak, which is weighing on prices, he said. Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka fell by INR 30-INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 1,600–INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. A rise in arrivals of the newly harvested kharif crop amid sluggish demand is pulling prices down, he said.
Prices of major varieties of RICE were steady in most markets on lack of cues, traders said. In Vashi, Navi Mumbai, prices of basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, respectively, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.
The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was stable at INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term as "there is no demand but lot of supply," he said.
Prices of WHEAT in Indore fell by INR 15 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 2,750 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices fell due to weak demand amid the open-market sales of the grain, which the government commenced last week, he said. "The overall mood of the grains market is low," he said.
Prices of wheat in Vashi held steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues, Vora said. Prices were also largely stable at INR 2,500 per 100 kg in Kota, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals in Kota were largely steady at 6,000 (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Currently, prices are steady in the lower range as the market is cautious due to the ongoing open-market sales of wheat, he said. "OMSS (open-market sale scheme) has kept the prices low," he said.
