NEW DELHI – Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi Tuesday said the Centre will examine the sugar industry's demand for a increase in minimum selling price of the commodity, the Press Trust of India reported. The minimum selling price of sugar is INR 31 per kg, unchanged since February 2019.
Joshi said the ministry would assess the impact of exports on sugar prices and then consider the industry's demand to raise the minimum selling price. "In the 2024-25 (sugar) season, prices were stable after we allowed exports of 10 lakh (1 million) tonnes of sugar," PTI quoted Joshi as saying on the sidelines of an event. "We have recently allowed exports of 15 lakh (1.5 million) tonnes of sugar for the 2025-26 season," he added.
Citing a rise in sugarcane prices, the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has been urging the government to increase the minimum selling price of sugar to INR 40.24 per kg. The political leadership in major sugarcane-growing states has also been pushing the Centre to raise the minimum selling price. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and urged him to revise the minimum selling price of sugar to improve the liquidity of sugar mills and enable them to pay sugarcane farmers on time.
For 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), many sugarcane-growing states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, have raised the state-advised price of sugarcane, increasing the cost of production of the sweetener. The state-advised price for the early variety of sugarcane and the common variety has been raised by INR 30 to INR 400 per 100 kg and INR 390 per 100 kg, respectively, in Uttar Pradesh. Haryana's government has increased its state-advised prices for early-maturing sugarcane varieties by INR 15 to INR 415 per 100 kg.
The state-advised price is a price announced by individual state governments. States that have state-advised prices for sugarcane are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand. The state-advised price is the minimum price at which sugar mills can procure sugarcane from farmers. The price varies from state to state, unlike the central government's fair and remunerative price. The Centre has raised the fair and remunerative price of sugarcane by INR 15 to INR 355 per kg for the 2025-26 season. End
