MUMBAI – India's natural gas production continued to decline in September, falling around 4% on year to 2.82 billion cubic metres, according to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. The decline was primarily due to an over 4% on-year reduction in offshore gas output, which accounts for 73% of Indian production, along with reduced output from the onshore Rajasthan field.

The country's natural gas production during Jan-Sept was 26 billion cubic metres, down over 3% on year, the intergovernmental organisation comprising the world's leading gas exporters said in its monthly report.

Global gas production rose 3% on year in September to 347 billion cubic metres. All gas producing regions, except Eurasia, witnessed positive production variation, with North America, specifically the US, leading growth, the forum said. Production in Eurasia fell around 7% on year in September. In Jan-Sept, global gas production rose around 2% on year to 3.15 trillion cubic metres.

India's natural gas consumption rose slightly, by 0.5% on year, to 5.80 billion cubic metres in September, marking the second consecutive growth after seven months of decline, it said. The fertiliser industry remained the largest consumer of natural gas during the month, accounting for over 28% of total demand, followed by city gas distribution at 23.5%.

India's demand for natural gas is expected to soften over Dec-Feb as the country moves into its cooler season, the forum said. "During this period, milder temperatures reduce the need for gas-fired power generation, leading to a seasonal dip in consumption compared with the summer and monsoon months when electricity demand for cooling is higher," it said.

Aggregate gas consumption in some of the major gas-consuming countries, which account for 75% of global gas demand, increased around 2% on year to 2.62 trillion cubic metres in the first nine months of 2025. The European Union, the UK and North America recorded growth, while Asia showed a decline, the report said. The global gas consumption growth estimate for the full year 2025 has been revised down to 1.5%, reflecting a slowdown in the industrial sector, it said.  End
