MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell again in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh on Monday due to sluggish demand, traders said. On the other hand, prices of the sweetener were steady in Maharashtra. Demand for sugar is down at the moment as there are no major festivals this month and as demand for other forms of sweetener such as jaggery increases during winters, they added.

Mills across Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg as demand for other sweeteners has increased, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices in the resale markets of the state were down by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg due to poor demand, he said.

Crushing of sugarcane is on in full swing but demand for sugar is limited. So, the downtrend is likely to continue, he said. Due to limited demand, traders in the resale market are not stocking up sugar and buying on a day-to-day basis, Gupta said. Demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers has fallen due to cooler weather in many parts of north India, Gupta said.

Though the government has allowed export of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar in the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), it is unlikely to have an impact on domestic prices as the Centre sets monthly sales quota to keep prices in check, Gupta added.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady due to weak demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. He expects prices to remain rangebound throughout the month.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,840-INR 3,970 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,860-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1950 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 1.3% at 14.76 cents per pound because of record sugar production outlook for Brazil. Conab, Brazil's crop forecasting agency, raised its 2025-26 sugar production estimate to 45 million tonnes from the previous forecast of 44.5 million tonnes.  End
