MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur showed a mixed trend Monday, while prices of moong were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana fell in some markets while they held steady in others as low demand matched low supply, they said. Prices of tur rose in some markets tracking the rise in prices of imports, they said. Prices of moong were unchanged due to muted market activity, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,750-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Prices are steady as demand and supply of the legume are both low and equally matched, he said. Prices are likely to fall by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term under the pressure of imports from Australia, which are cheaper than the domestic variety, he said. The first shipment of the Nov-Dec arrivals of Australian imports hit Indian ports last week, while another shipment is expected to arrive in the next 10–15 days, he said.

Meanwhile, the rabi chana sowing is progressing well in Madhya Pradesh, Kakani said. Favourable weather and timely sowing are seen favouring a good acreage this year, he said. As of Nov. 7, the acreage under chana was 2.68 million hectares, up 31% on year from 2.05 million hectares sown last year, data from the agriculture ministry showed.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 5,800-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. Eight to nine trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices have risen in some markets tracking a rise in prices of imports from Myanmar, while prices are steady in some markets, he said. Prices are seen steady in the near term as Sanklecha does not expect any spike in demand apart from millers making need-based purchases, he said.

The harvest of the kharif tur crop in Maharashtra is likely to be slightly delayed due to above-normal rainfall during southwest monsoon and post-monsoon showers, Sanklecha said. The excessive rainfall has also damaged around 20% of the tur crop in the state, which is likely to support prices at the bottom levels, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from Friday to INR 7,200-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MOONG prices at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 6,000-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of moong at Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 6,700-INR 7,000 per 100 kg. Prices are unchanged due to tepid market activity, Sanklecha said.

Prices are expected to be rangebound in the near term even though the market is receiving only low-to-medium quality arrivals of the new kharif crop, he said. Many buyers are holding off purchases, waiting for better quality arrivals, he said. The bulk of the early harvest of the legume is damaged due to excessive rainfall in September and October, he said.  End
