MUMBAI – Prices of maize rose in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Friday, supported by strong demand from the ethanol sector, traders said. Maize is a primary feedstock for ethanol production because its starch is efficiently converted into fermentable sugars and then brewed into ethanol. Prices of wheat and rice remained steady due to lack of fresh cues, they said. Prices of rice are expected to remain steady in the short term due to subdued demand, the traders added.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore rose by INR 35 per 100 kilograms to INR 1,835 per 100 kg, driven by high demand for ethanol, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka were steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,940 per 100 kg, said local trader Shiva Kumar. Arrivals fell to 5,000-6,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) from 7,000-7,500 Thursday. According to Kochar, maize arrivals in the market have a moisture content of 18–25%, compared with 35–40% in earlier arrivals of the grain. "When there is 14% moisture content in the grain, we call it dry," he said.
Prices of WHEAT in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg due to a lack of fresh cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. Prices were also steady in Indore at INR 2,770 per 100 kg, Kochar said. At Kota in Rajasthan, prices were largely steady at INR 2,500 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota rose to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 3,000 bags Thursday after the traffic congestion in the mandi cleared, he said.
The sowing of rabi wheat is progressing "great", Mehta said. Some oilseeds and pulses farmers are shifting to sowing wheat as "wheat is priority and water is in abundance", Mehta said. Wheat requires a higher moisture content in soil and more irrigation, and the above-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon and post-monsoonal showers have provided ideal conditions for the same.
Prices of major varieties of RICE remained steady in key markets due to lack of fresh cues. The prices of the basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, in Vashi, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, was stable at INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term as "there is no demand but lots of supply," they said. End
