NEW DELHI – India is set to consume more cooking oil as economic growth boosts households' purchasing power, Atul Chaturvedi, chairman of the Asian Palm Oil Alliance, said in a release. Though palm oil remains the most imported edible oil in the country, its share in imports has declined as soft oils gain preference, he added.
In India's edible oils import basket, palm oil holds a 50% share, soyoil 29%, and sunflower oil 21%. "However, palm oil's share has softened from 60% to 50% as soft oils have gained ground," as per the release.
India is also witnessing a shift in importers' sourcing patterns. The country has traditionally imported most of its palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia. However, Thailand has emerged as a new player, accounting for 10% of India's palm oil imports and steadily gaining market. Indonesia, which accounts for about 48% of India's palm oil imports, is losing ground while Malaysia is on the rise, going from 30% to 37%, as per the release.
On India's per capita consumption of edible oils, Chaturvedi said there are sharp regional disparities. Affluent regions consume over 25 kg per capita while the intake in poorer areas is less than 10 kg, according to the release. The national average stands around 17.5-18.0 kg per capita.
In September, the Asian Palm Oil Alliance signed a memorandum of understanding with the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries to improve the public perception of the oil. The collaboration aims to counter "misleading social media narratives", according to the release. The Asian Palm Oil Alliance will host the Palm Oil Conclave 2025 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on Dec. 6. End
