MUMBAI – India's vegetable oil imports, including both edible and non-edible oils, fell 9% on year to 1.33 million tonnes in October, according to the data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Thursday. However, for the oil year 2024-25 (Nov-Oct), the vegetable oil imports rose marginally to 16.4 million tonnes.
Crude soyoil imports rose to 414,619 tonnes in October from 341,818 tonnes a year ago and crude sunflower oil imports increased to 257,548 tonnes from 239,116 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Imports of crude palm oil fell to 587,882 tonnes from 596,929 tonnes last year.
For the oil year 2024-25, the total vegetable oil imports rose to 16.4 million tonnes from 16.2 million tonnes a year ago. Palm oil imports fell to 6.5 million tonnes, from 7.0 million tonnes a year ago. Import of sunflower oil imports fell to 2.88 million tonnes from 3.51 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. Imports of crude soyoil rose to 4.8 million tonnes from 3.4 million tonnes a year ago during Nov-Oct.
India October edible oil imports were at 1.3 milion tonnes compared with 1.4 million tonnes a year ago. Edible oil imports for the full year were at 16.01 million tonnes compred with 16.0 million tonnes a year ago.
Imports of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil during October fell to 5,000 tonnes compared with 236,175 tonnes a year ago. For the full oil year, refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil imports were 1.0 million tonnes compared with 1.9 million tonnes a year ago.
The government increased the duty difference between crude and refined oils from 8.25% to 19.25% on May 31, which resulted in refined palm oil imports falling. However, under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement--SAFTA--a large quantity of refined soybean and sunflower oil were shipped to India from Nepal at zero duty. "The ratio of refined oil marginally decreased to 11% from 12% due to lesser import of RBD Palmolien, while crude oil ratio increased to 89% from 88% mainly due to increase in import of soybean oil," the association said.
As of Nov. 1, domestic edible oil stocks at ports stood at 1 million tonnes, up from 657,000 tonnes a year earlier, while pipeline stocks fell to 728,000 tonnes from 1.8 million tonnes, the association said.
