MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, maize, and rice were steady Thursday in key spot markets across the country, due to a lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of basmati rice are expected to remain steady in the short-term due to low demand, they said.
Prices of WHEAT in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kilograms due to lack of fresh cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. Prices were also steady at Indore in Madhya Pradesh at INR 2,770 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. At Kota in Rajasthan, prices were stable at INR 2,480 per 100 kg despite a fall in arrivals, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota fell to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 6,000 bags on Wednesday "due to traffic jams in the Mandi," he said.
The government has started open market sales of wheat. As of Thursday, out of the 200,000 tonnes of wheat offered, 72,856 tonnes were sold, according to the Food Corp. of India.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore remained unchanged at INR 1,800 per 100 kg, due to a lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. Prices of maize at Davanagere in Karnataka were steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,940 per 100 kg, said local trader Shiva Kumar. Despite arrivals falling to 7,000–7,500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) from 10,000, traders do not see this as a significant fall, Kumar said. According to Kochar, the maize now coming to the market contains 18-25% moisture compared with 35–40% at the start. "When there is 14% moisture content in the grain, we call it dry," he said.
Prices of major varieties of RICE remained steady in key markets due to a lack of fresh cues. The prices of the basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, in Vashi, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, was stable at INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Prices are likely to remain steady as "there is no demand but lots of supply," they said. End
