MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric fell, while those of jeera were flat and those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Prices of turmeric fell due a rise in acreage in top producing regions, analysts said. Prices of jeera were flat amid limited buying and muted market sentiment. Prices of coriander rose due to firm wedding season demand amid low arrivals, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC fell 0.2% to INR 15,000 per 100 kg due to an increase in acreage in key growing areas in the current sowing season, Kedia Advisory said in a note. According to reports, turmeric acreage in Maharashtra, one of the top producers of the spice, is likely to see double-digit growth on year.

However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited due to persisting fears of crop loss and potential yield losses due to heavy rainfall in September and October. Prices are also likely to be supported by the ongoing wedding season demand, SMC Global said. Apart from the festival season, consumption of spices also increases during the wedding season, which spans from November to December.

The most-active December contract of JEERA was flat at INR 20,580 per 100 kg. Prices are expected to face resistance at present levels and move in the INR 20,240–INR 20,940 range owing to limited buying support amid plenty of stock continuing to weigh on the market, SMC Global said. Though wedding season demand could offer some support, the overall market sentiment is still muted, the brokerage said. By the end of the year, 300,000-400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded, leaving substantial carry-forward stocks of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said in a statement.

The most-active December contract of CORIANDER rose 0.1% to INR 8,568 per 100 kg due to strong wedding season demand and a decline in arrivals, SMC Global said. Steady export demand, along with ongoing purchases by traders and retailers is likely to keep prices supported in the near term, the brokerage said. India exported 27,913 tonnes of coriander during Apr-Aug, up 11% from the same period last year, data from the Spices Board of India showed.
