MUMBAI - Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell again Wednesday due to sluggish demand and higher supplies as the crushing season is in full swing, traders said. In Maharashtra, prices remained steady, they added.
Mills in central Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 60–70 per 100 kilograms while those in western Uttar Pradesh lowered them by INR 15–20 per 100 kg amid weak demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "Mills in central part of the state were selling at a higher price than the mills in other parts. Hence, they cut prices significantly today (Wednesday)," he said.
Crushing is on in full swing but demand is limited. So, the downtrend is likely to continue, he said. Due to limited demand, traders at the resale market are not stocking up sugar and buying on a day-to-day basis, Gupta said.
Demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers has fallen due to cooler weather in many parts of north
India, Gupta said. However, he expects sugar prices to start rising by the end of the month when the wedding season is in full swing in the north.
Though the government has allowed export of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar in the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), that is unlikely to have an impact on domestic prices as the Centre sets monthly sales quota to keep prices in check, Gupta added.
Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady amid weak demad, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. He expects prices to remain rangebound throughout the month.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,850-INR 3,985 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 60-INR 70 at INR 3,875-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1635 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.4% at 14.30 cents per pound. The International Sugar Organization has forecast a global sugar deficit of 231,000 tonnes for the 2025-26 season, marking the sixth consecutive year of deficit, which is a bullish factor for global sugar prics.
