NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera and coriander rose while those of turmeric fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Prices of turmeric fell due to profit-booking as prices surged above the INR 15,000 per 100 kg level this week, analysts said. Prices of jeera and coriander rose due to demand for the ongoing wedding season, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC fell nearly 1.4% to INR 14,980 per 100 kg due to profit booking. This is the second consecutive day of fall after prices surged above the INR 15,000-per-100-kg mark this week. However, prices are unlikely to fall drastically due to demand for the ongoing wedding season, SMC Global said. Apart from festivals, consumption of spices also increases during the wedding season, which spans from November to December in India. Moreover, rising concerns about potential loss of yield due to excessive rainfall in Maharashtra are also likely to support prices in the near term, the brokerage said.

The most-active December contract of JEERA was up 1.4% at INR 20,600 per 100 kg, supported by wedding season demand, SMC Global said. However, the upside in prices is likely to be capped due to high inventories, the brokerage said. Weak export demand also weighed on prices. According to data from the Spices Board India, the country exported 92,810 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Aug, down 17% from the year-ago period.

The most-active December contract of CORIANDER rose nearly 1.5% to INR 8,548 per 100 kg due to demand for the wedding season and lower arrivals, SMC Global said. Persistent buying from traders and retailers, and tight supply conditions, are expected to limit any sharp fall in the near term, the brokerage said.
