Mustard up in key markets; soybean, groundnut steady

MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed rose in key markets on concern of a supply shortage and reduced availability, traders said. Prices of groundnut and soybean were steady in key markets across the country owing to sluggish demand, they said. Farmers are offloading all their carryover soybean stock in the markets so there is ample supply, they added.
MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 25 from the previous day to INR 7,375-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. So far in November, mustard seed prices have risen around INR 275 per 100 kg. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country were steady at 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), according to GGN Research.
In Kota, also in Rajasthan, prices of the oilseed rose INR 100 to INR 6,600 per 100 kg, said local trader Mahesh Sameriya. Arrivals were at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 1,000 bags from the prevous day, he said.
Prices are up because heavy rainfall in the last week of October has raised the possibility of crop damage, which in turn could result in short supply in the market, traders said. Moreover, the new mustard crop will only be havested in February, so prices are likely to remain firm till then, they said.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,200-INR 4,750 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he added. Prices were steady owing to reduced demand for soymeal, a byproduct of the extraction of oil from soybean, traders said.
Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,100-INR 5,250 per 100 kg, as demand did not pick up, Porwal said. Arrivals were at 26,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), up 4,000 bags from the previous day, he added.
