Gujarat rabi acreage down 12% on year at 272,357 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 272,357 hectares as of Monday, down nearly 12% from 308,719 hectares a year ago, according to the rabi acreage crop report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal rabi crop acreage of 4.61 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 6% has been covered so far.
The area sown with wheat rose to 9,859 hectares from 7,604 hectares a year ago, the crop report showed. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.
The area under maize was 13,978 hectares, up from 8,584 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown with jowar fell to 205 hectares from 1,602 hectares. The total area under all cereal crops was 24,052 hectares, higher than 17,959 hectares a year ago.
The total area under rabi pulses in the state was 45,899 hectares, down from 46,672 hectares a year ago. Chana acreage was 31,100 hectares, up from 14,280 hectares.
Among oilseeds, the area under mustard was 58,707 hectares, down from 75,834 hectares a year ago. The total area under rabi oilseed crops was 58,800 hectares, down from 76,499 hectares a year ago, the report showed.
The area under sugarcane was 45,985 hectares, down from 64,402 hectares a year ago. The acreage of vegetables was down at 10,633 hectares from 17,115 hectares a year ago. The area under tobacco rose to 21,087 hectares from 19,820 hectares. Cumin acreage was up at 3,716 hectares from 1,174 hectares a year ago and coriander acreage rose to 1,066 hectares from 382 hectares. The area under potato was 18,214 hectares, up from 1,919 hectares a year ago, the data showed.
Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon rains are over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat. End
