MUMBAI – The sowing of rabi crops in Maharashtra progressed to 914,838 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 40% from 1.53 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal rabi acreage in the state, which is the average area of the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.

Excessive rainfall in the last leg of southwest monsoon and post-monsoon showers this year delayed the harvest of kharif crops in Maharashtra, which in turn has delayed the sowing of rabi crops in the state, market participants said.

The area sown under wheat was down to 41,698 hectares from 78,894 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Maize acreage fell to 91,915 hectares from 102,058 hectares last year, while that of jowar also slipped to 421,878 hectares from 735,738 hectares a year ago.

The total area under all pulses was 353,907 hectares, down from 602,875 hectares a year ago, according to the data. The acreage under chana was down at 343,592 hectares from 587,615 hectares last year. The area sown under other pulses, which include moong, urad and masur, was 10,316 hectares, down from 15,260 hectares a year ago.

The total area under all oilseeds fell to 4,947 hectares from 12,850 hectares sown in the previous year, the data showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under safflower was 4,306 hectares, down from 9,909 hectares last year.

Rabi crops are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April in the state. Besides chana, other major rabi crops in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard and peas.

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 92% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 87.2% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
