MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in Uttar Pradesh fell on subdued demand and the availability of alternatives such as khandsari and jaggery, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg as demand was poor, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand did not pick up at the earlier price levels, he said. Thanks to the availability of alternatives such as khandsari and jaggery, demand for sugar is low, he said. Moreover, given the limited demand from bulk consumers of sugar such as confectioners and ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, traders are preferring to buy the commodity on a day-to-day basis, he said.

Demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers has fallen with the weather becoming cooler in many parts of northern India, Gupta said. However, he expects sugar prices to start rising by the end of the month when weddings take place on a large scale in northern India.

Though the government has allowed the export of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar in the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), that is unlikely to have an impact on domestic prices of sugar as the Centre sets monthly sales quota to keep prices in check, Gupta further said.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Mills in Maharashtra had cut prices by INR 10 per 100 kg Friday with demand being poor amid increased availability, Kuvadia said. As the sugarcane crushing season is on in full swing, there is ample sugar available in the market, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,850-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,875-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1547 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.2% at 14.40 cents per pound, tracking a rise in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A rise in crude oil prices results in increased diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing the availability of sugar.  End

US$1 = INR 88.56
