MUMBAI – Futures contracts of jeera and coriander rose, while those of turmeric fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday. Prices of turmeric fell due to profit-booking as prices surged above the INR 15,000 per 100 kg level this week, analysts said. Prices of jeera and coriander rose due to the ongoing wedding season demand, they said.
The most-active December contract of TURMERIC fell nearly 7% to INR 15,340 per 100 kg due to profit booking as prices surged beyond the INR 15,000-per-100-kg mark this week, analysts said. However, prices are unlikely to fall as the ongoing wedding season demand is likely to keep supporting prices in the near term, SMC Global said. Apart from the festival season, consumption of spices also increases during the wedding season, which spans from November to December.
Rising concerns about potential yield losses due to excessive rainfall in Maharashtra are also likely to support prices in the near term. Incessant rainfall in Erode, Tamil Nadu, has also led to disease outbreaks in the standing turmeric crop and high humidity, making crop preservation difficult, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
The most-active December contract of JEERA was up 0.7% at INR 20,310 per 100 kg, supported by wedding season demand, SMC Global said. However, the upside in prices is likely to be capped due to the availability of elevated inventories, the brokerage said. By the end of the year, 300,000-400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded, leaving substantial carry-forward stocks of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said in a statement. Weak export demand also weighed on prices. According to data from the Spices Board of India, the country exported 92,810 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Aug, down 17% from the year-ago period.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER rose nearly 1.7% to INR 8,390 per 100 kg amid ongoing wedding season demand and lower arrivals, SMC Global said. Steady export demand for the spice is supporting prices, the brokerage said. India exported 27,913 tonnes of coriander during Apr-Aug, up 11% from the same period last year, data from the Spices Board of India showed.
