MUMBAI – India's demand for copper rose 9.3% on year to around 1.9 million tonnes in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), driven by firm demand from the construction, industrial, transportation, and consumer goods sectors, the International Copper Association India said in its 'India's Copper Demand in FY2025' report.

Growth in premium residential, logistics, data centres, and grade A offices along with infrastructure growth led to higher demand for wires, cables, and transformers, contributing to 43% of the total demand for copper. Consumer spending on ACs, fans, refrigerators, and washing machines resulted in 19?mand growth in this segment.

Copper demand in net-zero technology has led to one of the highest annual capacity additions in the renewable sector, according to the report. Demand for copper in net zero technologies rose to 87,000 tonnes in FY25 from 68,000 tonnes in FY24. Copper alloys catered to 13% of total demand during the year. Domestic production of cathode rose 10%, while net imports fell 34%, the report said. Net imports of rods and tubes rose 316% and 29%, respectively.  End
