MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops across India touched 13.03 million hectares as of Friday, up over 27% on year from 10.25 million hectares sown last year, according to the data from the agriculture ministry.
The acreage under wheat, the major rabi crop, was at 2.27 million hectares, up a whopping 128% on year from 998,000 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to the ministry's data. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India. Acreage of paddy was 618,000 hectares, up 8.2% on year from 571,000 hectares in the last year.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, was up 12.3% on year at 1.01 million hectares, the data showed. The area sown under jowar was 528,000 hectares, up 0.4% on year. Maize acreage was at 321,000 hectares as of Friday.
The total area sown under all pulses in the country so far in the 2025-26 season was 3.68 million hectares, up 21% on year from 3.04 million hectares sown last year. Among pulses, the acreage under chana was 2.68 million hectares, up 31% on year from 2.05 million hectares sown last year. Chana is the largest legume, both in terms of acreage and production, sown during the rabi season. Area sown under masur was 438,000 hectares, up 6.1% on year from 413,000 hectares sown last year. The area under urad is down 45.4% on year to 53,000 hectares. The acreage under moong was 3,000 hectares, down over 57% from the previous year.
The total area under all oilseeds was 5.45 million hectares, up 15% on year from 4.74 million hectares sown last year. Area sown under groundnut was 34,000 hectares, down 23% on year, the data showed. Mustard acreage was 5.34 million hectares, up 16% on year.
