MUMBAI – Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, and Indore, Madhya Pradesh, declined Monday following reports that the government may start open-market sales of wheat as early as next week, traders said. Prices of rice in Bhavanipuram, Andhra Pradesh, rose as the crops were damaged due to heavy rains in the region in the previous month, they said. Prices of maize remained steady across key spot markets amid a lack of fresh cues, they added.

Prices of wheat in Kota fell by INR 10 to INR 2,470 per 100 kilograms on low demand amid reports of the commencement of the open-market sales and high arrivals, Aniket Mehta, a local trader said. Arrivals in Kota rose by 8,000 bags to 12,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 4,000 bags Friday. Arrivals usually rise after weekends. Prices of wheat in Indore also fell by INR 10 to INR 2,765 per 100 kg due to reports of the open-market sales, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader said.

The Food Corp. of India is likely to offload approximately 2 million tonnes of wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme for 2025–26 (Apr–Mar), a government official told Informist Friday. The stocks will be offered to private buyers through e-auctions starting as early as next week, the official said. "The order for the sales of wheat in the open market is likely to be released soon," the official said.

Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, remained unchanged at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader said. "Till the time the government announces the exact dates for OMSS (open-market sales scheme), I don't see any changes in the wheat prices," he said.

The price of sona masoori RICE, a premium non-basmati rice, rose to INR 5,200-INR 5,300 per 100 kg in Bhavanipuram due to the crop damage, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. The state was hit by excessive rainfall in the previous month. Prices of basmati rice varieties 1401 and 1121 remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, at the Vashi market, Vora said.

The prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,780 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, remained steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said local trader Shiva Kumar. Arrivals in Karnataka rose to 10,000 bags from 7,000-8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.  End
