MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander rose, while those of jeera fell, on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday. Prices of turmeric rose due to steady wedding season demand and rising weather-related supply concerns, analysts said. Prices of coriander also rose due to wedding season demand and tight supply conditions, while prices of jeera fell due to weak market sentiment, they said.

The most-active December contract of TURMERIC rose nearly 3% to INR 15,498 per 100 kg due to steady seasonal purchases and demand for the ongoing wedding season, analysts at SMC Global said. Weather-related supply concerns and shrinking stocks in key producing regions also supported prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

Yield losses in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka due to excessive rainfall in the last leg of the southwest monsoon have raised supply concerns, Kedia Advisory said. Crop losses are particularly high in Nanded, Maharashtra, where nearly 15% of the turmeric area has been affected, it said. Overall, with steady domestic demand and concerns over limited supply amid weather-related uncertainties, the near-term outlook for turmeric remains positive, SMC Global said.

The most-active December contract of JEERA was down nearly 0.4% at INR 20,180 per 100 kg due to weak market sentiment. While wedding season demand is cushioning the downside to some extent, the overall market sentiment remains subdued with a weak undertone due to the availability of ample supply, SMC Global said. Traders also attribute the decline to comfortable supplies, adequate carryover stocks, and limited export interest, Kedia Advisory said. According to data from the Spices Board of India, the country exported 92,810 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Aug, down 17% from the year-ago period.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER rose nearly 0.4% to INR 8,276 per 100 kg amid firm demand in the spot market, analysts said. Prices are also supported by the ongoing wedding season demand amid lower arrivals, SMC Global said. "Sustained buying from traders and retailers, combined with tight supplies, is expected to cushion prices against any sharp declines in the short term," the brokerage said.
