NEW DELHI – Global coffee prices remained largely stable in October, with the International Coffee Organization's composite indicator averaging 326.38 cents per pound, up 0.5% from September. The indicator ranged between 314.68 cents and 344.77 cents per pound, the organisation said. The indicator "remained stable, moving sideways throughout the month of October," it added.
Coffee prices were largely stable as the optimism over easing tariff uncertainties was offset by concerns over slowing global coffee consumption. The two nations could "pretty quickly" strike a trade deal, the report quoted US President Donald Trump as saying, following talks with Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. However, weak consumer spending in the US and high inflation in coffee producing countries capped gains in prices.
The price of Colombian Milds coffee was largely unchanged at 403.25 cents per pound in October, and that of Other Milds rose nearly 1% on month to 403.79 cents per pound. Brazilian Naturals fell 0.4% to 373.47 cents per pound, but Robustas rose 2% to 215.06 cents per pound in October.
The arbitrage between New York ICE and London Intercontinental Commodity Exchange narrowed nearly 3% to 163.84 cents per pound, while volatility across markets increased.
Global green bean exports in September fell 0.2% on year to 9.94 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg). This is the sixth month of contraction in the current coffee year 2024-25 (Oct-Sep), with the volume of total bean exports down 0.8% to 121.26 million bags. Green beans include Colombian Milds, Other Milds, Brazilian Naturals, Robustas, and Arabica coffee beans.
For the coffee year 2024-25 ending September, exports of Colombian Milds and Other Milds increased 7% on year and 6% on year, respectively, while Brazilian Naturals fell nearly 22% on year and Robustas rose 23% on year. Arabica exports fell 1.2% on year in 2024-25.
Global exports of all forms of coffee fell 2.8% on year to 11 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg). "South America was the driver of the overall downturn, overwhelming the positive expansions of the remaining three regions," the report said.
South America's exports decreased by 13.9% to 5.67 million bags in September, largely due to Brazil's cyclical production downturn and logistical bottlenecks at Santos port. "This is the tenth consecutive month of negative growth for the region, following a 16-month streak of positive growth," it said.
Africa's exports increased by 3.2% to 1.49 million bags. "Ethiopia and Uganda were the main drivers behind the region's positive expansion in coffee year 2024/25," the report said. Mexico and Central America's exports decreased by 14.6% to 790,000 bags. Asia and Oceania's exports rose 29.3% to 3.05 million bags in September, mainly driven by Indonesia and Vietnam.
In 2024-25, global coffee production rose 5.2% on year to 177.51 million bags, while consumption rose 1.4% on year to 175.07 million bags, resulting in a modest global surplus of about 2.4 million bags, the report said. End
