NEW DELHI – The Food Corp. of India is likely to offload approximately 2 million tonnes of wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme for 2025–26 (Apr–Mar), a senior government official said. The stocks will be offered to private buyers through e-auctions starting as early as next week, the official said. "The order for the sales of wheat in the open market is likely to be released soon."
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra had said on Sept. 11 that the government has allocated 3 million tonnes of wheat for auctions under the open market sale scheme in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
Under the open market sales scheme, the government fixes the prices of rice and wheat and sells the grains to bulk buyers, such as states and private millers, through electronic auctions. The government's weekly e-auctions of rice and wheat are meant to cool retail prices nationwide.
In 2024-25, Food Corp. of India began wheat open-market sales in December and sold the entire 3.0 million tonnes allocated amid firm demand and tight supply. In 2023-24, the government sold 9.4 million tonnes of wheat — an all-time high — under the scheme to curb prices ahead of the General Election.
However, wholesale grain prices have been stable. Friday, wheat prices at Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, with traders expecting prices to remain steady till the end of the year. Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were also steady at INR 2,775 per 100 kg. End
